Kennel Club Days:
Dude,
I had quite the reverie of the Kennel days as I paused in a metal easy chair by a fountain in the Royal Palace gardens this morning, coming back from the Seine on my pre-Christmas shopping rounds, leaning back and looking up at the big cloudy Paris sky this morning. (Nice to have been observed by the DJ, btw!) What you achieved there was so unique: A scene that was 'hip' without being trendy; cool without being 'chic'; world without being too 'folky'; non-commercial while still being eminently 'danceable'; where people could dress up or dress down, as they liked; where slackness was discouraged but where it was okay to ask a woman to dance or just start dancing with her; in a word, DEMOCRATIC. I don't think I was alone among the regulars, anyway, in being someone who, on the one hand, would never be comfortable in a normal 'club' -- crowd and doorman attitude, generic beats, dress-code, etc. -- but felt at home at the Kennel. That was YOU my friend and DJ mentor!
...For some reason I am remembering the regular who danced 'just' on crutches, always with a big SMiLE on his face....and indeed who might be saying even now, Jah bless I and I, you and yours, and us all.
Peace, Paul Ben-Itzak, Dance Insider magazine
